We do love our prestige watches here at James Ross Jewellers and we have sold some expensive pieces over the years but this list of watches is something different altogether. These are the most expensive watches ever sold according to MoneyInc and they are really quite extraordinary.
10. Breguet & Fils Paris 2667 Precision 4
This beautiful pocket watch was created by the company founded by Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1770. It broke records as the most expensive Breguet watch ever sold when it sold at an auction at Christies for $4.68 million.
9. Patek Philippe Calibre 89
Made in 1989 to celebrate 150 years of Patek Philippe, this watch was the most complicated ever made at the time. It features 24 hands as it displays a thermometer, a star chart, phases of the moon, times, dates and other data. Only four of these watches were created and they were all created of different materials, yellow gold, white gold, rose gold and platinum. One of these very limited editions would set you back a cool $5 million.
8. Hublot Big Bang Diamond Wrist Watch
Another $5million watch, this brand is favoured by footballers, F1 drivers and pop stars. In a style which is very popular with hip hop artists, this model is ‘iced out’ with 1,280 diamonds and was bought as a gift by pop star Beyonce for rapper Jay Z in 2012 and he still owns the watch.
7. Patek Philippe Reference 1527
Although less complicated than the Calibre 89, this Patek Philippe watch is even more expensive at $5.7million because it is one of a kind and made of the very expensive 20 Carat rose gold. It also contains over 20 different precious stones and was made in 1943.
6. Rolex Daytona
The only Rolex in the top ten, this Daytona model sold for $17.8million. It’s a lovely watch but you might wonder why it sold for so much. It sold for such a large sum because it used to be owned by actor Paul Newman who apparently wore it every day from 1969 to 1984. Newman wearing this watch made sales of the same model shoot up at the time so it’s not too surprising that a fan was prepared to pay such a huge sum for the actual watch he wore.
5. Patek Philippe Henry Graves Supercomplication
This third and final top ten entry for Patek Philippe took 8 years in total to create in the 1930s. It broke the world record for the most expensive watch ever sold in 1999 at a price of £11million but recently sold again more recently for a gob-smacking $24million.
4. Chopard 201 Carat
201 Carat in the name of this watch does actually refer to the 201 Carats of diamonds and other precious gems encrusting this watch. There are 800 diamonds of various shapes, sizes and colours including three heart shaped diamonds in blue, pink and grey. Even the watch face is set with yellow diamonds to give the time a shimmering background. All that glitz would set you back $25million.
3. Jaeger-LeCoultre Joaillerie 101 Manchette
It looks like a bracelet at first glance but this watch actually holds the world record for tiniest watch movement ever made. With its 576 diamonds set into white gold tiles, it’s a fascinating piece and the Queen apparently was given one of the watches in this collection which she wore for her coronation. We aren’t sure what Her Majesty’s one is worth but this one costs around $26million.
2. Breguet Grande Complication Marie-Antoinette
Called ‘Marie-Antoinette’, this watch was actually created for the woman herself but, sadly, was completed around 30 years after she died. It features every type of complication which had been invented at the time and was finally completed in 1827. We have no idea what it would have cost at the time but in the 2000s it was valued at around $30million.
1. Graff Diamonds Hallucination
If Jay Z thought the watch Beyonce bought him was impressively ‘iced out’, he wouldn’t believe his eyes if he saw the Hallucination. It contains 110 Carats worth of diamonds of all shapes, sizes and colours which were all hand placed to create this incredible watch. It was released in 2014 with a price tag of $55million.
We don’t get too many $55million watches in our shop but we do get in a wide range of superb prestige watches. If you are interested in owning a vintage prestige watch, please give us a call on 01273 239763 or pop into our shop.
